Pahalgam Ladakh is primarily known for adventure tourism and its monastries & Gompas. Ladakh is also famous for festivals that are held in major Bhuddist monastries. The main features of these festivals are the dance- dramas enacted by Lamas, donning colourful robes and fearsome masks representing various Buddhist deities. The Hemis festival held in june is the most prominent event. Every 12th year, a huge Thangka of Padmasambhava, founder of Tibetan Bhuddism, is ritually exhibited during this festival, summer archery festivals are held in many villages as per local traditions. The 15 day Ladakh festival from september 1 to 15 is major event sponsored by J & k government to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Ladakh. The three day Sindhu Darshan festival in june, sponsored by Ministry of Tourism , Government of India, showcases the historical and cultural importance of Indus valley. these are many places in Ladakh region, which are worth visiting and attract tourists from all across the world. Leh town , situated at 3505 meters above sea level, has many historic monuments among them is the nice storey Leh Palace built by king Singe Namgyal in the 17th Centuary.
North of Leh is the Nubra Valley , situated at
height of 3200 mtrs above sea level, on the erstwhile silk route, nestling
along the foothills of the great Karakoram range, The road to Nubra runs
across Khardung - La situated at height of 5578 mtrs above sea level known
as world's highest motorable road. prominetnt places to visit here include
the capital town of Deskit( 118 Km) , Hundar ( 125 Kms), that has small
population of double humped Bacterian camels, a legacy from the central
Asian trade caravans. Pangong Lake ( 150km/4267 mtrs) is about 130 km long and 5-6 km wide , straddling across the border between India and China . The hills of the Chang- Chenmo range surrouding it from the north province a spectacular backdrop to the blue and green expanse of its brackish waters.
Tso-Moriri; situated 4572 meters , set in the
desolate landscape of Rupshu, is famous as the breeding ground of the rare
bar headed geese, and home to a number of other rare bird species. River rafting options are alplenty in Ladakh, The stretch of indus between Karu & Spituk offers half-day scenic floating amidst beauftiful landscapes and rural scenary. For white water rafting expeditions Zanskar River provides the ultimate challange, comparable to the course of the Colorado through the Grand Canyon. Mountaineering is yet another activity for which Ladakh is very populor. The most populor sites are Panamik and Saser Kangri, mountaineering expeditions are required to have proper clearance from Indian Mounteering Foundation ( IMF) New Delhi or its branch at Leh. Kargil, another district in the Ladakh region, spread over 14086 sq kms, lies on the line of Control ( LoC), and is located 204 km from the capital city of Srinagar, Zanskar is also part of Kargil district along with Suru , Wakha and Drass valleys, This region has recently been thrown open to tourists, The district is nestled in the Himalayas.
