Gulmarg is situated at 2730 fet Above Sea
Level, Gulmarg's legendary beauty, prime location and proximity to Srinagar
make it one of the Asia's premium hill resorts. Gulmarg is also India's
premium skiing resort in winter when it is covered in snow and takes the
appearance of a picture postcard.
Skiing season usually commences here just before Christmas and continues
till early April. In year 1998 Gulmarg hosted first National Winter Games of
India, for which the facilities were enormously upgraded and improved.
Gulmarg is well suited for learing skiing. It has some of the best slopes
for beginners and intermediate skiers, all serviced by ski lifts and chair
lifts.Most of the skiing activities are centered around these slopes,which
have ski runs ranging from 200 to 900 mtrs. Good quality equipments
including skies, sticks, gloves, and goggles are available on hire from the
government run ski shop. Trained instructors are at hand for guiding amateur
skiers.
Among the numerous slopes,some are not serviced by ski lifts. These
are quieter than those immensely populor with average skiers. Trained skiers
take to those slopes and even trek in the snow for several hours to the top
of the Apharwat range, to make a descent lasting not less than 30 minutes.
Now with the setting of the Gandola cable car, Gulmarg has become the
highest lift served ski resort in the world providing a downhillski run of
5.2 km from a height of 14000 feet in Apharwat range. It is also Asia's
longest Gandola served ski lift. Gulmarg also offers a host of other snow
sports at this time of year.The most populor snow sport in tourists is
riding on snow sledge and being pulled on snow covered roads or gentler
slopes.Tobogganing alos does not require any skills, A woodden snow board is
taken up the hills and then allowed to slide down hill. Snow boarding is
also introduced in Gulmarg.
Ice hockey during chilly evenings is also coming up with as the most
favoured winter sport here.Heli-skiing has been introduced in Gulmarg in
collaboration with Sylvian Saudan of Himalayas Heli-Ski club of France. For
this highly exciting sport, skiers are taken to the top of mountain ridges
by helicopters from where they ski down the immense Himalayan slopes.
